先来个经典例句：He who laughs last, laughs the best. 笑到最后的人才是赢家。
定语从句里，从句作定语修饰或说明的部分，叫先行词。上句中，he是先行词。
所以，要理解定语从句，要先找出先行词。
先行词在定语从句构造过程中的作用两个句子拼一起的时候，衔接两个句子的词，就是先行词。如上图的the girl，在两个句子里都出现，那么两个句子合一起，它就是先行词。
上图是以下句为主句，以上句为从句构成的定语从句。
当然也可以上句为主句，以下句为从句：
The girl who is a freelance writer lives next door.
做自由撰稿人工作的那个 *** 住隔壁。
先行词可以不是词先行词这个表述是不确切的。它可以是名词，是代词，是形容词，还可以是短语，从句甚至整个句子。
名词
This is the reason why I refused your proposal.
这就是我拒绝你提议的原因。
The girl who wears blue coat is my girlfriend.
穿蓝大衣的 *** 是我女朋友。
代词
He who shall not be named is Voldemort.
那个不能被提名字的人是伏地魔。

形容词
I'm so careless, which you should not be.
我很粗心，你不该这样。
Women are careful and patient, which men seldom are.
女人细心而有耐心，男人很少能做到。
从句
They say nothing last forever, which was not true because women believe diamond will.
他们说没有东西是永久的，我觉得不是。因为女性那么喜欢钻石。
You say you love me, which do not believe.
你说你爱我，可是我不信。
整句
I arrived late, which make my boyfriend angry.
我迟到了，这让我男友很生气。
His girlfriend has many male friends, which really makes him worry about losing her.
他的女朋友有很多异性朋友，这让他很担忧失去她。
